2018 New Year Resolutions

For 2018, take a single action a month to focus on for your year’s worth of resolutions. These are 12 SIMPLE biblical principles we can all improve upon. To help explain each area of focus, we’ve offered the Bible’s explanation of how to apply every principle.

A B I D E await, remain, dwell, continue, and endure.

What does the Bible say about abiding?
  • John 15:4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
  • John 15:7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
  • 1 John 4:13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.
Pause:
If abiding means we must connect, depend on, and remain with God, which one do you struggle with the most?

B E L I E V E to have firm persuasions of truth.

What does the Bible say about belief?
  • John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
  • Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • John 20:29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

What blessings might you be missing out on from not believing?

C O N T E N T permanent state of inward satisfaction.

What does the Bible say about contentment?
  • Hebrews 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
  • Philippians 4:11-13 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be contentwhatever the circumstances.I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
  • 1 John 4:13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.

What earthly desires are leaving you feeling unsatisfied?

F E A R L E S S free from fear; courageous.

What does the Bible say about fearlessness?
  • Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
  • 2 Timothy 1:7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
  • Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

What is bringing fear or discouragement that you have yet to overcome?

F O R G I V E  to let go.

What does the Bible say about forgiveness?
  • Ephesians 4:31-31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
  • Leviticus 19:18 Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.
  • Colossians 3:13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

What do you need to let go of and who do you need to forgive?

G R A T I T U D E  the quality of being thankful.

What does the Bible say about gratitude?
  • Psalm 118:24 The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.
  • Psalm 136:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.
  • Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
Pause:
Start spreading words of thanksgiving today and everyday.

H E A L T H your body is a temple.

What does the Bible say about health?
  • 1 Corinthians 3:16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
  • 1 Corinthians 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
  • 3 John 1:2 Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

Is your body living for God as your spirit is?

J O Y gladness in the Lord.

What does the Bible say about joy?
  • Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
  • Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
  • Psalm 18:24 The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

What’s keeping you from being joyful?

L O V E unconditional, deep affection; God.

What does the Bible say about love?
  • 1 Corinthians 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
  • Romans 13:9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Describe the different ways you can love.

What does the Bible say about mercy? 
  • Luke 6:36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. 
  • Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
  • Matthew 9:13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

What blessings can you offering in lieu of punishment?

P E A C E being in harmony with God & all of God’s creation.

What does the Bible say about peace? 
  • 2 Thessalonians 3:16 Now may the LORD of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The LORD be with all of you.
  • 1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace-as in all the congregations of the LORD’s people.
  • Psalm 46:10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Do you seek peace from the Lord or from your own doing?

T R U S T to place confidence in; to rely on.

What does the Bible say about trust? 
  • Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
  • Psalm 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.
  • Luke 1:37 For no word from God will ever fail.
